Caceres:
Attracting interest
Premier League
Winner without Big 4
Chelsea are reported to have lodged
a bid for Uruguayan international Martin
Caceres. The left-sided central defender
is currently on a season-long loan at
Recreativo from Villarreal. The 20-year-old
signed for Villarreal last year on a
five-year contract after impressing
in the World Youth Cup and they opted
to send him on loan to help him adapt
to life in Spain and Europe.
But Caceres' performances have been
beyond expectations and he is already
attracting interest from some of the
continent's biggest hitters. Real Madrid
made an enquiry but before they had
a chance to take it further - Chelsea
owner Roman Abramovich stepped in with
a 10 million euros (£7.6million)
bid but that was rejected by Villarreal.
Caceres's current buy-out clause stands
at 20 million euros (£15.2million)
which neither Chelsea or Real are likely
to go to - but the English side have
not given up. |

Owen:
Settled on Tyneside
Striker vows to
prove critics wrong
Newcastle striker Michael
Owen insists he is happy at the club
despite their disastrous run of form.
The Magpies have been dragged into a
relegation fight after failing to record
a win since Kevin Keegan's return to
the club in January. Owen's future on
Tyneside has been the subject of speculation
with his current contract due to expire
at the end of the season.
Former Liverpool star Owen is reported
to be looking a new deal at Newcastle
and the 28-year-old says he is settled
at St James' Park.
"I know people talk about contract
negotiations," Owen told the
Daily Mail. I'm in a similar position
to a lot of players at our club.
Settled
"I'm settled in Newcastle and
I am happy at Newcastle, although
not happy with the results at the
moment."
Owen also admitted he fears for his
place in the England squad after failing
to make the starting XI in Fabio Capello's
first game in charge against Switzerland.

Curbishley:
Standing strong
Premier League
Winner without Big 4
West Ham United boss
Alan Curbishley is suffering from sleepless
nights after three consecutive 4-0 defeats.
Pressure has mounted on Curbishley after
his side slumped to 4-0 losses against
Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
And the Hammers manager, who received
the board's backing on Monday, has conceded
that the results have left him with
an uneasy feeling.
"I never expected those three results,"
he said in the Daily Express.
Horrible "It
has been a horrible week for me, the
players and the fans, but there has
been no board meeting about it, no
players' meeting either.
"For me, it's the sleepless nights
again; the knot of anxiety in the
stomach, but it goes with the job.
I have to stay strong."
Curbishley went on to bemoan the increased
expectation levels placed on his side,
which saw many tip The Hammers to
secure a top-six finish this term.West
Ham narrowly missing out on relegation
last campaign and Curbishley admits
that he has paid the price for high
spending and an unfortunate number
of injuries.
